Lego: playing well for 50 years

happy birthday lego

The brick is 50 years old! The Lego brick was patented on January 28th, 1958 and has had an immense impact on the world since then. Lego was born from the creative mind of Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen back in the early 1930’s. The Lego name was coined in 1934, meaning “play well” and it certainly has lived up to it’s name. The Lego brick as we know it today was adapted from a Kiddicraft design in the 40s and eventually perfected with it’s modular ‘locking’ design in 1958. This same design is still used today and old and new bricks are compatible! The rest is history!

Lego today is a global craze and enjoyed by fans both young and old. Originally conceived as toys, the infamous bricks have spawned a wealth of creativity from all age groups. Below are just a tiny selection of Legoworks which have caught my eye.

Party Pix Experiment

Time out! So I went out and got drunk on Friday night which lasted well into Saturday. It’s been a while but it was good to catch up with my friends. I don’t get out enough, which is kind of self inflicted for a number of reasons! Anyhow it was a good laugh and I ended up back in Highbrazil (not correct spelling!) for an after party in the small hours for my friend Jen’s birthday.

I had just recently got my good Lumix camera back from repair so I took it upon myself to grab some obtrusive shots! It’s just as well my friends are used to me when I am snap happy! I got a good exposure set on the camera so I could snap away without the flash and be sure that the majority of the shots would come out ok (I avoid the flash as much as possible). Read more

Stayin' Alive in Lebanon

This is great stuff, got this via Holy Shmoly. The Irish Army are “Stayin’ Alive” in the Lebanon. This video is currently being investigated by the Military police and I hope they have a good laugh about it and then forget about it. This type of behavior should be encouraged! The British Army did a version of “Is This The Way To Amarillo” based on the Peter Kay Comic Relief sketch which sparked this off and I hope it becomes a trend. Imagine a Taliban and Al Qaeda version! This could bring about world peace! Or locally and better still would be an Irish government one to the tune of Abba’s “Money, Money, Money”

From RTE News:

This afternoon, a spokesman for the Defence Forces said the video had first been uploaded while the troops were in Lebanon. It was then taken down but posted again recently. The spokesman said the posting of videos by soldiers on peacekeeping duties was an unwelcome trend and was not at all encouraged by the authorities.
